With age or weight loss, people notice that their breasts are not as perky as before. To regain a youthful appearance, a breast lift surgery or mastopexy can be considered.

Mastopexy aims at reshaping and raising the breasts higher on the chest thereby creating a youthful look. When breast lift is done along with breast augmentation surgery it results in enhanced bust size and better shape.

Mastopexy is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia.

  • The procedure involves surgically lifting sagging breasts farther up on the chest. An incision in made on each breast and the skin around the areola is removed and the nipple is relocated to a higher position. Then, the skin above the nipple is brought down and around the swell of the breast making the breast appear tighter and higher.
  • Most common techniques of breast lifts are vertical scar breast lifts where the incision is vertical and doughnut mastopexy also called a peri-areolar or Benelli lift, where the incision is made around the areola.
  • Week 1 – you are likely to experience some bruising along the incisions, which will diminish by the end of the 1st week. A surgical bra should be worn during this period.
  • Week 2 – Sutures will be removed and you will be advised to wear a support bra for a few weeks. Bruising, pain and swelling are markedly reduced. And you will be able to return to work during the 2nd week.

It is imperative to follow all post operative care instructions given by your surgeon to reduce risk of complication and to ensure a good result.

  • Ensure that you wear the surgical bra or the support bra at all times till your surgeon advises you otherwise. Do not wear an underwire bra during the first one month after surgery.
  • Do not lift anything above your head for three to four weeks following surgery, and avoid lifting heavy weights for four to six weeks.
  • Ensure that you sleep on your back for several weeks following surgery.
  • Patients could consider a Mastopexy if they have drooping breasts caused due to massive weight loss, pregnancy or age
  • Patients should be in good health and should not suffer from diabetes or heart conditions.
