A facelift or rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure designed to reverse the effects of aging on facial skin by tightening loose skin and underlying tissues and removing excess fat. It addresses problems areas of the lower part of the face, around the nose, the chin and the neck.

People having deep and superficial facial wrinkles around eyes, temples, mouth, cheeks, jaw line and neck, droopy cheeks and jaw line, jowls, loose hanging skin and neck wrinkles or bands are best suited for this procedure.

  • A standard face-lift is generally performed under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with sedation. The patient may go home the same day.
  • The procedure involves making incisions in front of and behind the ears and in or behind the hairline, separating the skin from the underlying fat and muscle. These muscles are then tightened and the skin is re-draped while excess skin is trimmed away. In some instances, deeper tissues may also be repositioned.
  • Other types of facelift are mid facelift where incisions are made in the muscle tissue of the face, the fat and muscle tissue are adjusted in order to pull up the middle of the face.
  • Endoscopic facelift requires lesser incisions than a standard facelift. In this procedure an endoscope and surgical instruments are introduced through small incisions to remove excess fatty tissue and reshape facial muscles.
  • Threadlift uses special threads to repositioned skin and facial tissue. In this procedure thin threads are inserted into the face through tiny incisions and these threads are attached to the skin tissue and pulled back and knotted to lift and smoothen the face tissue.
  • Mini facelift also known as the weekend facelift where endoscopic method is used for specific areas of the face, such as the neck and the folds of the nose.
  • Depending on the complexity of the problem, a facelift surgery may take between an hour and four hours.
  • Week 1 – swelling, bruising and numbness is normal in the first couple of weeks after the surgery.

Adequate rest is very important for a good recovery. Sutures are usually removed on the 5th day after the surgery and the patient can see the initial results of the facelift soon after this.

  • Week 2 – after surgery, bruising and swelling is almost gone and the patient can return to work at the end of 2 weeks.

Patients, who undergo an endoscopic facelift, thread face lift or a mini face lift have a very short recovery period and can return to work in 2 days time.

  • Take adequate rest and avoid heavy physical activities, however walking and mild stretching are ok during the first few days or weeks depending on type of face lift.
  • No vigorous exercise, heavy housework and lifting for at least two weeks after surgery.
  • It is advisable to avoid saunas and steam rooms several months.
  • Alcohol also should be avoided for several months.
